Alumni Spotlight: LaShante Keys, Class of 2020

Alumni Spotlight: LaShante Keys – From LSP to Legacy-Building
When LaShante Keys joined the Leadership St. Pete (LSP) Class of 2020, he never imagined how radically it would shape his path. What started as an opportunity to connect and grow ended up being the spark that launched a bold, purpose-driven journey into entrepreneurship—and beyond.
The Courage to Begin
“I got my courage to become an entrepreneur because of my experience with LSP,” LaShante reflects. With a professional background in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), he was used to working within systems—supporting others as they navigated racism, bias, and discrimination. But LSP pushed him outside that familiar space.
Assigned to the Economic Development team, LaShante found himself immersed in the world of entrepreneurship—listening to founders, hearing their struggles, and seeing the power in building something from the ground up.
A turning point came during what seemed like a casual outdoor conversation with classmate Mike Thackery. “I don’t even remember all the words he said,” he shares, “but I remember how they made me feel: capable. Like maybe this life I had become exposed to could actually be mine too.”
After navigating the challenges of a pandemic and officially graduating in August/September 2020, LaShante took the leap. By January 2021, he launched his first company—and hasn’t looked back.
“LSP didn’t just introduce me to new people—it introduced me to a new version of life.”
Leading with Purpose
Today, LaShante leads three ventures—all deeply aligned with his values of equity, engagement, and sustainable growth:
- Community EFX: A nonprofit focused on the wellness and advancement of Black and Brown men through healing-centered programs like The Cookout and Celebrated Not Tolerated.
- Keys Consulting Firm: A strategy and engagement firm that partners with cities, campaigns, and companies to build trust, gather community input, and move projects forward with integrity. Past and current partners include the Tampa Bay Rays, the City of St. Petersburg, HDR Engineering, and Kimley-Horn.
- White Keys: A real estate development company he co-owns, dedicated to equitable neighborhood revitalization. “We believe development should serve the people, not displace them.”
Each venture may serve a different function—but together, they reflect LaShante’s commitment to inclusive, community-rooted progress.
The Class That Changed Everything
LSP’s Class of 2020 was historic—not just because of its length (thanks, COVID), but also for its widespread impact.
Originally, the class was set to renovate Family Resources Inc. When the pandemic disrupted those plans, they pivoted—channeling their energy into a citywide leadership initiative. They supported the City’s Fighting Chance Fund, hosted virtual events, created a community calendar, and even painted a mural in downtown St. Pete.
“We may be the longest class in history—but we’re also the most far-reaching,” LaShante says proudly. “So we are truly THE BEST CLASS EVER!!”
Looking Ahead
Personally, LaShante is preparing for a major milestone—his son is headed to high school. “Knowing I’ve only got four more years with my buddy at home hits a little different,” he shares.
Professionally, he’s got a full plate—and a full heart. Upcoming projects include:
- Collaborating with LSP alum Tamika Mitchem of Mitchem Services on local initiatives
- Working with Brian Peret to develop a mobile app for Community EFX
- Teaming up with Erica Sutherlin on a September art gallery opening focused on Black Male Joy
- Expanding into West Palm Beach and other markets with new equity-centered work
“As the song goes, this is my season to reap what I have sown.”
A Final Note
When asked about hobbies, LaShante laughs.
“Sleep has become a hobby!”
And honestly? With the life he’s building, he’s more than earned the rest.
