Ripples That Last: The Clam Bayou Class Project
More Than a Makeover: The Power of an LSP Class Project

Waves of Inspiration: How One Class Project Keeps Making Ripples
Alumni Impact Spotlight — Leadership St. Pete, Class of 2022
Tucked at the end of a hidden dirt road beneath a canopy of live oaks, a mid-century ranch in South St. Pete opens onto one of the city’s most peaceful waterfront views. This is home to the Clam Bayou Marine Education Center (CBMEC)—operated in partnership by the University of South Florida College of Marine Science and the City of St. Petersburg—where local youth and educators dive into marine science and STEM. Notably, CBMEC hosts Oceanography Camp Especially for Girls, a program that has inspired our community for over 30 years.
In 2022, CBMEC became the recipient of the Leadership St. Pete (LSP) Class Project, titled “Waves of Inspiration.” When the class arrived, the site needed upgrades to match its mission. The biggest challenge: two expansive concrete slabs overlooking Boca Ciega Bay—prime gathering space that was simply too hot to use for much of the year.
What the Class of 2022 Built
To transform that potential into daily impact, the class delivered thoughtful, durable improvements that turned the backyard into a true outdoor classroom and community hub:
- A permanent shade structure to cool the space and extend year-round use
- Plush artificial turf for comfort and accessibility
- Picnic tables with umbrellas for learning and gathering
- Natural walking paths that connect spaces and protect native flora
- A Florida native garden to teach and restore
- A boathouse wash station with a custom logo mural that doubles as wayfinding and pride of place
Lasting Impact—Still Growing
Being an LSP Class Project recipient isn’t a one-weekend boost—it’s a catalyst. CBMEC’s team reports they’re using the improved spaces constantly, and the attention generated by LSP has helped unlock new momentum for the center:
- A five-year funding agreement with the City of St. Petersburg
- Plans to develop an endowment to sustain programs long-term
- Additional interior upgrades completed with residual class funds
In short, the project didn’t just refresh a backyard; it expanded capacity, deepened community trust, and accelerated investment in a place where curiosity meets opportunity. The improvements make it easier for CBMEC to welcome more students, more often—especially during Florida’s hottest months—so hands-on learning can thrive.
“Waves of Inspiration” is a clear example of how LSP projects create deep, durable, and continuing impact—the kind that keeps working long after the ribbon is cut.
